What is RDP? How to use it

The Windows Remote Desktop Connection tool allows users to connect to remote Windows servers or PCs via the internet, or a local network. This gives them full access and control over all the software and tools that are installed on the server. Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol, or Cheap RDP is what makes this possible.

RDP can be used to connect to any Windows server or PC. However, only certain Windows versions allow RDP connections. This proprietary protocol is comparable to the open-source Virtual Network ComputingVNC), which is commonly used on Linux and other operating systems.

What is RDP?

Remote users can use the Remote Desktop Protocol to view and use Windows from another location. Remote machines share key peripherals such as your keyboard and mouse, which allows you to control and use it like you are sitting right in front.

RDP connections must work properly if you have two components: an RDP server and an RDP client . An RDP server is a Windows PC or server that you connect to and can control. A client is a computer or mobile device that has an RDP client installed. From this client, you can control the server. Microsoft provides its own client for Windows and macOS. It also offers Android and iOS clients. There are many third-party options for Linux and other platforms.

RDP is only supported by Windows. You can only use RDP to establish remote connections with Windows Servers or Windows PCs that support it. Windows 10 Home is not compatible with all versions of Windows. Windows 10 Home can only be used to connect to Windows Remote Desktops.

Only one connection can be established to Windows PCs with remote desktop enabled. You will need a Windows server that has Remote Desktop Services (RDS), installed and activated to connect multiple users simultaneously.

Remote Desktop Gateway is required to establish RDP connections from remote locations to secure enterprise networks. It must be installed on a Windows Server installation. This service provides increased security and replaces the need to have an internal virtual private network.

How to enable remote desktop connections on Windows

You will first need to enable RDP on the remote server or computer in order to use RDP to connect with another Windows PC. It is easy to configure Windows to enable Remote Desktop.

Tips to establish secure Windows Remote Desktop connections

Remote desktop solutions can open up a vulnerability that could be exploited. RDP is no exception. The RDP port (port 3389), is well-known and is regularly scanned for exploits. You need to have a plan in place to protect Windows Remote Desktop.

Remote Desktop Gateways can be used by enterprise users to provide secure access to RDP servers. However, standard Windows users do not have this option. To establish secure RDP connections, you will need to apply common sense solutions. Here are some tips to establish a secure RDP connection:
